Soccer and sports training at UCundinamarca

The UCundinamarca Primera C team promotes regional talent and life training with a sports project based on MEDIT.

By: Alejandro García Suárez – Advisory Office of Communications

The University of Cundinamarca continues to strengthen life training through sports, in consistency with the Transmodern Digital Educational Model (MEDIT), which promotes human development, teamwork, leadership, and social transformation from different learning scenarios.

To this end, the institution officially presented its professional Primera C category soccer team for the 2026 season, a project that integrates regional talent, discipline, and athletic projection. The squad is made up of 30 players who will compete in the National Category C Tournament, becoming the first club from the Sumapaz province to participate at this competitive level after more than two decades.

Following the official launch, the UCundinamarca News Agency spoke with Santiago Reyes Molina, coach and technical director of the team, about his sports career, the team's construction, and the expectations for this new season.

UCundinamarca News Agency (ANUC):How has your training process and sports career been until reaching the management of the Universidad de Cundinamarca's Primera C professional soccer team?

Santiago Reyes Molina (SRM): My journey began at a very young age with the Cundinamarca Team in the U-13, U-15, and U-17 categories. Sports opened many doors for me, and later I had the opportunity to be part of development programs at Independiente Santa Fe in the U-15, U-17, and U-19 categories. I was also associated with Santa Fe's professional team in 2010 and later worked with Deportes Tolima. Additionally, I participated in national and international tournaments as an athlete.

Regarding my training as a coach, I hold a degree in Physical Education and Conmebol C, B, and A licenses for professional soccer. I am currently finishing a master's degree in Sports Management at the University of Valencia, Spain. I have worked at different clubs in Fusagasugá, and thanks to the results achieved, I managed the Fusagasugá Selection in 2018 and 2019, winning a youth departmental championship after more than 20 years. Later, I was assistant coach and then head coach of the Cundinamarca Selection for five years.

In 2021 we achieved an outstanding national participation and many of those players today are part of Colombian professional football. Afterwards, the possibility arose to lead this project with the University of Cundinamarca, together with the director of the Academic Sports Center CAC, Nubia Arias, and coordinator David Murcia. Today we are consolidating our second participation in Primera C.

ANUC:What characteristics and strengths did you find in the players from the region to build a team with its own identity and dynamic soccer?

SRM:  Before making the call for auditions, we carried out a talent characterization of the region and found a very high technical level in Fusagasugá and Sumapaz. Based on that, we built our style of play and selected players with great footballing ability. Many have been part of the Cundinamarca and Bogotá regional teams, others were in the youth divisions of professional teams, and some even had international experience. This creates a very positive mix to achieve our goals.

We want a dynamic, competitive team with good tactical memory and clear patterns of play. We are committed to attractive football, featuring passing sequences, speed, and collective work to compete in a high-level tournament.

ANUC:This is the team's second consecutive year in Primera C. What lessons did the previous season leave behind, and how are they reflected in this new process?

SRM:  This year we have a more mature team with greater experience across all lines. We learned a lot from the 2025 season, especially regarding aspects related to intensity and training planning. Last year we trained three times a week; now we work daily and that has strengthened the group's performance. In addition, we left a few roster spots open to respond to any eventuality during the tournament. I feel that the growth has been steady and that allows us to face this new season with more preparation and confidence.

ANUC:The goal for 2026 is to be among the top 30 teams in the country. What aspects will be key to reaching that goal and projecting toward Primera C Especial in 2027?

SRM:  We know that Primera C brings together more than 200 teams, and being among the top 30 will be essential to continue growing toward professional soccer. The fundamental thing will be to maintain a united group, strong mentally and physically, with clear short- and medium-term objectives. We are aware that we still have aspects to improve, but we also know that we have a competitive roster to take on this challenge. Our purpose is to continue strengthening the University's sports project and consolidate ourselves as a regional and national benchmark in Colombian soccer.

The Primera C football team will officially begin its participation in the 2026 season this Sunday, May 10, at 2:30 p.m., at the Universidad de Cundinamarca football field, where it will face the Flamengo de Cota team in a match that will mark the beginning of this new sporting challenge.
