This initiative, called the "mathematics club", seeks to encourage the learning of this science in a didactic way, and has been led by the teacher Jaime Alfonso Gutiérrez of the Faculty of Education of UCundinamarca with the support of the students of the degree in Mathematics.
“We bring mathematics to social media through interviews, recreational activities, and even games with strong disciplinary content that allows us to advance with mathematical thinking, also using quantum physics in some cases,” said teacher Gutiérrez.
This project, which began in 2018, started with the search for new alternatives for teaching mathematics, reaching private and public educational institutions in Fusagasugá and surrounding municipalities in person during 2019 with didactic and recreational activities based on methodological references.
“However, with the pandemic, we could no longer go to schools to teach, so we started using social media. Knowledge was shared through entirely alternative teaching methods and with language appropriate to that used by new generations on social media, even considering the frequency with which young people use it, in order to reach them,” the teacher pointed out.
But as if that weren't enough, the "Mathematics Club" also had a radio presence. "We knew that many families in Sumapaz didn't have internet access, so in partnership with the municipality's Education Secretariat, we brought the program 'Neither More Nor Less,' taking mathematics to every corner. It was gratifying to learn that we had listeners from Argentina, Italy, and Mexico," he commented.
Finally, it is important to remember that this project obtained second place on March 30th in the Third Exchange of Innovative Experiences, an initiative of UCundinamarca that seeks to promote and recognize the teaching work and its innovative teaching methods.
“What EFAD does with these types of activities is important because they motivate disciplinary knowledge and the teaching community to continue seeking new methods that allow knowledge to be communicated more effectively,” the teacher concluded.
