Luis Antonio Rodríguez, a professor at UCundinamarca and a specialist in sports training, presented a Physical Activity and Active Breaks Program that will benefit the administrative community, teachers, maintenance staff, and general services personnel.
The instructor proposed activities such as fitness classes, Zumba, yoga, stretching, recreational activities, and musical breaks. These activities will be held virtually every day at 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, lasting 10 to 15 minutes, in virtual rooms that will be shared and which many are already familiar with, using platforms such as Google Meet, Teams, and Zoom. In-person sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 am and 11:00 am at the Fusagasugá campus.
Additionally, virtual active breaks are offered to foster habits and discipline during off-hours, specifically before 8:00 am and after 6:00 pm. Each branch or extension has its own schedule with student interns in charge.
“According to the World Health Organization (WHO), sedentary lifestyle is the cause of 6% of the planet's deaths”3.2 million people die each year from not adopting a sufficient level of physical activity. And according to the United Nations agency, sedentary people are between 20 and 30% more likely to die at a young age than non-sedentary people,” the professor identified.
The Occupational Health and Safety Office at UCundinamarca, coordinated by Dr. Olga Lucia Perilla, invites you to participate in these activities, which aim to promote mental, physical, and social well-being, thereby improving your health and work environment by enhancing your habits and lifestyles.
The implementation and development of the project is in an exploratory, promotional and diagnostic dissemination phase where work has been carried out one day a week since February, in the different departments and offices.
The process
After conducting a physical activity assessment among the staff of the different departments of UCundinamarca, it was concluded that a physical evaluation is necessary.
According to teacher Fernando Ardila, it is necessary to strengthen the muscular system, combined with respiratory management, mental control, relaxation, and thus improve joint mobility and muscle elongation to prevent and correct postural alterations, and reinforce ideas of self-control and self-esteem.
In order to improve health in all aspects, the entire community is invited to take these active breaks and do the exercises designed to improve health and prevent problems caused by sedentary lifestyles.
