Youth-friendly unit

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and the difficulties in providing personalized care from healthcare professionals, the Friendly Unit remains close to the community, its work with young people continues to be active and yields important results in care, prevention, and support.

“In schools we provide care virtually; the final semester nursing students have the program to promote leaders in Sexual Health,” explained teacher Yamile Vargas.

The program provides tools to teenagers from the Luis Duque Peña, Atanasio Girardot, and Ramón Bueno schools in Girardot who are completing their community service. Nursing students in their final semesters at the University of Cundinamarca prepare a course every Friday, which is attended by more than 40 young people.

The courses focus on sexual and reproductive health and first aid. “This training is important for the lives of teenagers; they need tools to face the world, and we didn't let the pandemic be an obstacle. Since we can't be in person, we offer the courses virtually,” the teacher explained.

UCundinamarca carries out these programs as a practice for Nursing students; however, one of the main objectives is to provide a social service to the community.

“It is necessary to inform young people about all contraceptive methods, preconception, breast and testicular self-examination, among other things,” said teacher Yamile, one of those in charge of accompanying the students of UCundinamarca and guiding them in this task.

This program is one of the different services provided by the Friendly Unit and no service has been suspended due to the pandemic. The teacher states that practices are promoted and assignments are given to the students who attend the talks, thus ensuring that they have understood and will put this knowledge into practice.
