“It is education, science, technology and knowledge in the 21st century, in this society of technology and knowledge, that allow development in each of the territories,” said Rector Adriano Muñoz Barrera, during the ceremony he called the rebirth of UCundinamarca in Zipaquirá.
The 4,051.53 square meter plot of land donated by the Municipality for the construction, which will be carried out by UCundinamarca and will have an investment of 22 billion pesos, is a hope for the dream of young people and families in the region who will be able to access higher education, thanks to the public University.
The event took place on the morning of April 7th and featured a Seven Barks tree, planted as a symbol of the foundation stone. This tree is representative of the city, and in honor of harmony with nature, it was chosen as the cornerstone. All those present participated in the planting process.
The rector of UCundinamarca highlighted the importance of the construction of the new headquarters, as well as the importance of the translocality and transmodernity of the Institution that forms “men and women who transform themselves and transform the reality around them, human beings who think about others and the needs of being, who know that values come first and that their behavior with nature and others is transcendental.”.
For his part, the mayor of Zipaquirá, Dr. Wilson García Fajardo, expressed his satisfaction with this important event, which directly benefits the residents of the municipality, as this campus will be able to accommodate 2,700 students per semester—undoubtedly a great opportunity. “This day is very important in the history of Zipaquirá because it guarantees access to higher education,” the mayor stated.
Councilman Wilmar Cristancho, president of the Zipaquirá Municipal Council, who championed the UCundinamarca initiative, said that the council was committed to supporting the institution so that it could complete these works in November 2023. He also paid tribute to Professor Daniel Forero, who believed in this dream and died hoping to see it become a reality.
Fabián Rojas, Representative for Cundinamarca, highlighted the University's work in the city over the years and its efforts to bring this project to fruition. “This wonderful project is moving forward, and we in the Assembly and the Governor's office are proud of this work and want this project to become a reality so that the educational infrastructure presented here can be built. Today marks the beginning of a great hope for education in Zipaquirá and Cundinamarca.”.
Construction will last 18 months in its first phase, and the university is expected to offer undergraduate and graduate programs. José María Leiton, Undersecretary of Education for the department, also attended the event and acknowledged the importance of the university for Cundinamarca.
The rector also thanked the UCundinamarca team, directors, administrators, teachers and those who, on a daily basis, strive to build this dream that is now a reality.
It is worth noting that the parish priest, Pablo Jaime Martin, performed the blessing of "the first stone" and of the land, so that love may be sown there and that every step of the University in this municipality may be protected by divine help.
