UDEC investigates the importance of sport in adult women

Liliana Patricia Cuellar, a professor at the University of Cundinamarca, is leading a project in the Sports Science Seedbed with a group of students whose objective is to investigate the relationship between the training that adult women take and its impact on fat and muscle percentage.

This is based on research into the population and hundreds of articles discussing the relationship between training and the health of these women, as well as the pathologies that develop if there is no proper lifestyle.

Ángela Valentina Cifuentes, Karen Viviana Sierra and Luis Sebastián Barbosa are the students participating in the project called: Effects of training between concurrent, continuous, hit and rumba with the greatest impact on fat and muscle percentage in adult women – a systematic review.

What do the four training sessions consist of?

To advance the research, a systematic review was required that compiles the four types of training:

Continuous: It is extensive and without rest periods.

Concurrent: Combines aerobic and strength training. This is the type commonly performed in gyms.

HIIT: High-intensity interval training with limited rest periods.

Rumba: It is set to music, incorporates aerobics, and has minimal breaks.

“This project arose because this population currently has a high percentage of unhealthy habits and lacks healthy lifestyles, due to the high rate of physical inactivity, which has led to serious illnesses such as overweight and obesity in women. That's why women are taking up this type of training, to lower their body fat levels,” stated student Luis Sebastián Barbosa.

For her part, Ángela Valentina Cifuentes stated that they are in the research development stage and so far have analyzed several articles, finding a total of 1,099.

“We searched a global database. In the search diagram, we can see that we have compiled 1,099 articles, of which 48 have been registered or excluded. A thousand articles were selected by their title or text, which were then read, and some were discarded due to privacy concerns or because they did not fall within a quartile classification,” said student Ángela Valentina.

Finally, the team indicated that when reviewing the community, they analyzed variables from the composition of each person in terms of fat and muscle percentage.
