Together we can prevent suicide!

It will be an awareness day, which will take place on September 29 and 30 at the Girardot branch, aimed at the university community, in which the prevention of suicide, its myths and truths will be discussed.

This important date, commemorated every September 10th worldwide, has the sole purpose of raising awareness that suicide is preventable. According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), more than 700,000 people take their own lives each year globally, which translates to one death every 40 seconds. In Colombia, according to DANE (National Administrative Department of Statistics), the figure is no less alarming, with 2,962 suicides recorded in 2021.

This is why, as an educational institution, seventh-semester nursing students who are studying the thematic core: Nursing Care of the Person and Community Groups in Mental Health, will project videos where they will talk about the conceptualization and current state of suicide as a public health problem, in addition to knowing its factors and warning signs, among others.

“It will be a day that will allow us to identify the problem in time and thus be able to address it by understanding its myths and realities; the idea is to become transformative agents that contribute to society,” said Amanda Ortiz, coordinator of the Nursing program core.

In addition, a symbolic act will be carried out in which the "Education" monument in the local branch will be illuminated with the color yellow, which represents this struggle, to commemorate the nearly 3,000 people who died by suicide during 2021 in the country.

“Remember that it is important to take into account people’s statements when they talk about suicide, because we need to give them confidence and encourage their self-esteem, in order to support them so that they do not make wrong decisions or recommend that they consult an expert,” the coordinator added.
