Caring for others is not an easy task; in fact, it requires training that teaches service for life, democratic values, civility, and freedom, as indicated by the Transmodern Digital Educational Model (MEDIT) of the University of Cundinamarca.
Therefore, the institution has confidence in the nursing program that aims to train Udecino nurses with a focus on self-awareness and awareness of others, as explained by the teacher, Carlota Castro Quintana.
“Since 2003, we have been managing the monitoring and support program for Udecino nurses. At that time, inclusion criteria were not used; instead, from the curricular flexibility guidelines, we used the concept of how the world is an inverted unit that is built when we have complex dialogues, when we see that no two humans are the same, that there is respect for differences, and when the other is recognized,” stated Professor Carlota Castro Quintana, who leads the Friendly Unit project at UCundinamarca.
From the first semester, students are taught to recognize themselves and to learn to recognize others in a dynamic exercise; this should be considered in the formative process.
According to the professor, the basic elements of the Friendly Unit are the support program; classroom projects for deepening sexual health; social outreach; research with vulnerable populations that includes groups such as pregnant adolescents, male and female sex workers, the LGBTI population, violence, children and adolescents at risk and substance use; and programs for the promotion of care.
The team's latest results include aspects such as the empowerment of teachers in the mentoring program, graduates with experience in the differential care of adolescents and young people, and representation of academia in the Lgbti advisory council of the municipality of Girardot.
“Articulation of the sectional monitoring program to the unit's care processes and the positioning of the unit at the local, departmental and national levels.
We have achieved an extension of services to two educational institutions in the municipality, a humanization policy for the unit, contributions to the construction of public policies of the municipality: childhood and adolescence, women and Lgbti gender, and finally the creation of a document of bioethical and legal aspects in the care of adolescents and young people.”.
The teacher finally indicated that it is important to work with the child and not directly with the parents to teach them to love their body and make decisions about it.
The Friendly Unit at the University of Cundinamarca has a team of 10 people including nurses, psychologists, and other professionals, and is supported by nursing students.
