Technology to save lives

Before and after a surgical procedure, people require special care; however, access to information for the rural population in our country affects these processes, which is why UCundinamarca is advancing with the development of an application that will save lives.

This project is led by the Infosoft Gindesoft research group from the Faculty of Engineering, the Verita Said group from the Faculty of Human Sciences, and the Perioperative Nursing Care group. Nursing professor Rosibel Prieto Silva and professor Yudy Narváez state that they are confident this project will provide the rural population of the municipality of Soacha, where the pilot program is being conducted, with all the information they need about pre- and post-operative care, just a click away.

“By incorporating artificial intelligence through machine learning techniques, it is possible to establish criteria that allow for the generation of early alerts and recommendations for symptom management and control in patients, and likewise to enable timely follow-up by medical personnel.

Through this app, patients can access more information about their surgery and their pre- and post-operative care. They can also report symptoms, allowing medical staff to respond in real time and know the patient's location in case of an emergency.

According to Engineer and Professor Narváez: “the objective refers not only to the development of a digital application, but also to the social impact it can generate by contributing to a timely and comprehensive monitoring of the entire perioperative process (before and after surgery) and therefore to an improvement in the quality of life of people.”.

This applied research consists of two stages: the first consists of the development of a mixed study that will allow a multidisciplinary approach to the state of individual and collective perioperative health in the rural areas of the municipality of Soacha.

The second stage involves the design and pilot testing of a digital prototype for monitoring individuals who require or are experiencing any phase of the perioperative process. This project is funded by a joint research grant from the University of Cundinamarca and the National University of Colombia.

“We are in the initial phase, which is why we need to involve the community interested in participating. We invite residents and community leaders from rural areas of Soacha to participate in conducting interviews for this project.”.

Finally, it's worth highlighting that this research project involves not only faculty members but also students from both UCundinamarca and Unal. Two engineering students, Jhonatan Becerra and Michael Acero, are involved in the undergraduate projects. Additionally, Ruben Felipe Jimenez, an engineering student, is working on a postgraduate project and will be responsible for designing the advertising and marketing strategy for the project.

Technology at the service of Soacha

Soacha is one of the municipalities in Cundinamarca with the largest rural population, approximately 5,062 people. However, healthcare facilities are located in the urban area, making it difficult for the community to travel there.

“By incorporating technology through comprehensive digital monitoring systems, we can solve the perioperative problems in the rural area of Soacha. The app has a simple and intuitive interface so that feedback between patients and healthcare professionals is constant and user-friendly.”.

What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is an area responsible for studying computational models capable of performing activities based on reasoning, behavior, and flexible adaptation; therefore, it allows the development of systems considered intelligent, using machine learning; it is possible to identify patterns and create programs that learn automatically.

Therefore, the app being developed at UCundianamarca is based on the development of this type of technology.
