Symposium on popular education, rurality and peace

The event will take place in the auditorium of the Center for Knowledge Management and Learning M 101. It will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on Facebook. With this symposium, the institution reaffirms its mission to build an academic culture characterized by a scientific and investigative spirit with ideological pluralism.

UCundinamarca News interviewed Omar Fabián Rivera Ruiz, coordinator of the Orlando Fals Borda Regional Center and professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Faculty of Education, to learn the details of this academic event.

UCundinamarca News: What is the objective of the activity?

Omar Fabián Rivera Ruiz: The objective is to carry out an exercise in systematization and creation of knowledge networks at the regional level on significant experiences, regarding popular education, rurality, peace and conflict.

UCundinamarca News: What will the event program consist of?

Omar Fabián Rivera Ruiz: We will have keynote lectures by five academics: Lola Cendales, a popular educator with extensive experience; then Robinson Piñeros, an educator and professor at the Universidad Surcolombiana, an expert on rural issues; next, Professor Maddison Carmona from the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional will speak on urbanization and territory; Andrés Caro will discuss regional history; and we will conclude the day with Professor Liseth García, who will speak on peace and conflict. We will also have representatives from various non-governmental organizations, the Universidad del Tolima, and victims' organizations.

UCundinamarca News: What lessons can someone in the humanities field learn from attending this event?

Omar Fabián Rivera Ruiz: It's important for our students to learn about these processes, their experiences, and the perspectives from other communities on these topics, and to learn from other processes of systematizing social experiences. Furthermore, it highlights different social phenomena that occur in rural areas and within the framework of popular education. It's also a space to motivate them to conduct research, and in fact, we'll have presentations from several of them.

UCundinamarca News: What is the in-person registration process like?

Omar Fabián Rivera Ruiz: You can register through a QR code link we've activated in the advertisement, which is already circulating on our institutional social media channels. We have a limit of one hundred spots and the registration process is progressing well.

UCundinamarca News: What is the most attractive aspect of this event?

Omar Fabián Rivera Ruiz: In addition to everything I've mentioned, I want to emphasize that it will be a blend of knowledge because we'll have doctoral candidates studying at Javeriana University, the University of La Sabana, and the District University. Likewise, there are others pursuing their undergraduate degrees and master's degrees who will exchange knowledge with community leaders, enriching the exchange of ideas.

UCundinamarca News: Will there be any written records of this academic experience?

Omar Fabián Rivera Ruiz: Yes, with the co-organizing universities, including the Universidad Surcolombiana and the Politécnico Gran Colombiano, we will do it, and it will be a book that contributes to the reaccreditation process of the Social Sciences program.
