Student experiences in their internships

Environmental Engineering students Julisa Hernández Hernández and José David Bonilla Sierra are developing a project at the General Fernando Landazábal Reyes Battalion, located in Bogotá, where they have begun the recovery of the flood zone within the facilities and the reactivation of the Santa Bárbara nursery with the propagation of 5,000 seedlings of species such as: Chicala, Mano de oso, Alcaparro Enano, Jazmín Del Cabo and Cajeto.

This project, which has been rewarding and enriching for the soldiers of the environmental squad, has been disseminated through the Alternativa Estéreo radio station, which is part of the National Army network and reaches many people in order to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands.

Meanwhile, Paola Hernández, Lizeth Méndez, Camila Moreno, Daniela Díaz, Michael Martínez, and Sebastián Blanco, also Environmental Engineering students, are developing reforestation projects at the Communications Center in the municipality of Facatativá. They are working to propagate native and pioneer species that promote ecological restoration. There, they prepare each plant for planting in the various campaigns carried out in several municipalities of Cundinamarca.

With the support of teacher Fredy Duque, these projects have a learning objective, but above all a task that allows for continuous monitoring and maintenance in the areas already intervened in order to ensure the viability and evaluation of the initial objective.

“In this productive stage, we have learned aspects such as the identification and reception of seeds of native species along with the various treatments they must receive for their germination and propagation according to the characteristics, planting methods, according to the area and the type of restoration desired, and other factors that are directly involved with the objective of the project,” said Lizeth Carolina Méndez Ruiz.

“By developing environmental education training programs, we aim to highlight the importance of each of the environmental factors that have been affected by human actions. We raise awareness and seek solutions to mitigate environmental impacts and establish actions that begin to make a difference in the care of ecosystems and natural resources,” the student explained.
