With the research project “Relationship between perceived stress and sleep quality in nursing staff at the San Rafael Hospital in Facatativá”, Students Iván Alfredo Peña Rodríguez, Lina Paola Nieto Olarte and Diana Mayerli Sánchez Preciado, from the ninth semester of the Psychology program, presented the main results at the IX Nursing Update Conference: “Nursing: Science and Vocation.”.
The project aimed to determine the relationship between perceived stress and sleep quality in nurses on night and rotating shifts at the State Social Enterprise, Hospital San Rafael de Facatativá, where results of the test components were articulated and analyzed in order to establish differences between these two variables.
The paper presented is the product of the monograph option degree work, advised by the lead teacher of the CRESER research group of the Psychology program, Rafael Leonardo Cortes Lugo.
“This project stems from the need to address these types of problems among nursing staff, because they are part of the productive workforce in hospitals and healthcare institutions, and they are the ones who have direct contact with patients. Likewise, according to scientific evidence, nurses are the ones who experience stress primarily due to a lack of staff support and excessive workloads, a situation prevalent throughout the country due to overcrowding. Therefore, the San Rafael Hospital in Facatativá is the ideal location for this research, as it is one of the most important hospitals in the Western Savannah region and serves a large population.””Rafael Leonardo Cortes Lugo explained.
The research for this project, which has been going on for about a year, included stages of preparation, theoretical research and permit applications; as well as phases of applying the instruments to the population and another that consisted of preparing results, discussions, conclusions, recommendations and corrections.
The direct beneficiaries are the nursing staff and the indirect beneficiaries are those users, patients and the community in general who frequent the San Rafael Hospital of Facatativá.
The results of the investigation have shown a prevalence of 72,45% of perceived stress and 79,60% of poor sleep quality in the nursing staff of the night and rotating shifts of said Institution.
This report has allowed the research to have a great impact on the community in general, being known by the Ethics Committee of the San Rafael Hospital with great acceptance and also being known in the academic community.
The event was attended by nursing professionals, Medifaca, Hogar la Milagrosa, Hospital Nuestra Señora del Pilar, Hospital de la Vega, Hospital san Antonio de Anolaima and Elite Flowers, nursing students from UDCA, Unisanitas, Admisalud and INCATEC, members of the users association and the academic community of the University of Cundinamarca.
