The student community of the academic programs of Business Administration, Environmental Engineering, Public Accounting, Systems Engineering, Psychology and Agronomic Engineering, and eleventh grade students of the Colegio Mayor de Occidente as part of the social projection of the English area met to participate in the English Day, in the Gesell Chamber, Facatativá Extension.
The English Day at the Facatativá Extension had the purpose of pTo promote the use of English as a communication tool for real and current issues in our Colombian society and to empower students as knowledge producers in the design and preparation of communicative activities that promote understanding of other cultures. This is an opportunity to extend a special thank you to all the students who collaborated and actively participated in the event.”. Martha Isabel Díaz Ramírez, leader of the event and professor of the Business Administration program at the campus, highlighted this.
The event began with a spelling bee featuring famous soccer players. Students then presented a timeline of the history of the World Cup, showcasing sports venues, food, flags, traditional costumes, and climates of participating countries such as Colombia, Iceland, Brazil, Argentina, England, and Mexico. Following this, the participants performed musical pieces representing the vallenato folklore of Colombia, featuring traditional rhythms, and presented a comedic theatrical performance.
It is worth noting that the institution is committed to a bilingual university through academic programs in the English department, such as immersion programs, bilingual field trips and guided tours, singing competitions, and continuing education courses. Currently, mid-year continuing education courses are being offered not only to the university community but also to the residents of the municipality of Facatativá.
Likewise, from the classroom, teachers cultivate the culture of speaking English with everyday activities such as listening to music, watching and listening to news in English, participating in international social networks, online forums, creating articles, making videos, among other training processes.
Each semester, an English Day is held to showcase the work done in class. For example, last semester's theme was "Let's Talk about Peace," and this semester's theme was "English Ambassadors." Each student's work contributed to representing a country and successfully portraying it in front of the participants using a foreign language.
