This semester began the first phase of the project to update the network and communications infrastructure of the University of Cundinamarca, Soacha extension, which seeks to renew the fiber optic connection, structured cabling, electrical network, wifi service and IP digital technology.
The project has a budget of 1,442,397,117,270 and will have a six-month execution period. According to engineer Paola Ramírez, coordinator of the technological services area at the University, this infrastructure intervention seeks ‘not only to comply with the regulations regarding connectivity for the extension, but also to address the needs of the academic community that requires good internet access.“.
Engineer Ramírez also clarified that the project is currently two weeks into its execution, during which the contractor is conducting a detailed analysis of the networks to validate all the requested work and begin the improvement process. "This means that we will be starting the civil works next week," she explained.
However, this project not only involves rewiring the extension, but also upgrading the Soacha extension's Wi-Fi technology to Wi-Fi 6, the latest version, allowing users to connect to the University's open network from anywhere on campus. In addition, the extension's telephone system will be upgraded to a digital infrastructure, eliminating the need for a physical telephone exchange.
Because these renovations involve civil works, including excavations and the use of scaffolding, engineer Ramírez urges the academic community of the extension campus to heed the signage posted by the contractor in the areas where the improvements are being carried out. “This is to ensure compliance with the occupational health and safety regulations of both the contracted company and the University,” explains the technology coordinator.
Likewise, these adjustments may also cause intermittent network access in the extension, so the academic community is advised to pay close attention to internal communications regarding the work, so as not to be affected.
With this in mind, the first phase of this infrastructure renovation project is expected to be completed in early August. This will allow the Soacha extension, along with its three undergraduate programs and its specialization, to be at the forefront of connectivity in the municipality, and bring the academic community closer to the digitization processes proposed by the Transmodern Digital Educational Model (MEDIT).
