UCundinamarca News spoke with her about the significance of this important achievement, which is part of a broader research process by the UDECARTE group within the Music program. She had the privilege of meeting this long-lived composer during a four-year study period in Havana, where he was her teacher. From this experience, an important professional relationship developed with this renowned figure in classical music and education, for whom she became a key interlocutor in countless conversations at his residence.
She soon returned to Colombia after her academic exchange, and in 2019, the opportunity arose to conduct an academic analysis of his violin works. She then flew to Havana and met her 101-year-old mentor, who was lucid and active. During her stay there, she conducted interviews and researched his compositions. The result of this work was the text "Fiesta con Tambores: La Música para Violín Solo del Compositor Cubano Alfredo Diez Nieto" (Party with Drums: The Music for Solo Violin of Cuban Composer Alfredo Diez Nieto), which was published in this prestigious journal.
UCundinamarca News: What is the importance of publishing in the Casa de las Américas Music Bulletin magazine?
Tatiana Perilla: It is a very important magazine, as it covers musical topics from all over Latin America and this publication belongs to Casa de las Américas, which is an internationally recognized institution as one of the most prestigious forums for research in music and art in general in the region.
UCundinamarca News: What is the content of this article?
Tatiana Perilla: The article analyzes the violin music of composer Alfredo Diez Nieto based on precepts he himself mentions, which are related to his aesthetic. It is a nationalist music that uses elements of Cuban rhythms and gives the violin a percussive feel, since the rhythmic expression of his country was very important to him, and all these elements are present in his work.
UCundinamarca News: What was the process like for getting your article published?
Tatiana Perilla: We are carrying out this process within the framework of the university and its research group UDECARTE, through which we won an internal grant from the university on the work of two masters, one Colombian, Blas Emilio Atehortua, and the other Alfredo Diez Nieto. We are conducting a study on the solo guitar and solo violin music of these two musicians, together with co-director León Salcedo.
Among the objectives we had to achieve were recording the music, encouraging students to conduct research, giving concerts, and publishing in prestigious scientific journals. With that in mind, I submitted my article to the call for papers issued by the Casa de las Américas Music Bulletin. It went through a review process, and my text was selected.
UCundinamarca News: When does the research project conclude?
The research project concludes around November of this year. We still need to hold a concert and record an album as the final product. I want to highlight the participation of six students from the research group: three violinists and three guitarists, who have provided significant support.
In this way, UCundinamarca is committed to education for life, democratic values and freedom from the research field, a fundamental pillar of any higher education institution.
