Reign of Recycling in Girardot

The Environmental Management project at the Girardot campus held its Recycling Queen pageant on May 12th, with seven candidates from various academic programs participating. This activity strengthens the sustainable campus project and environmental stewardship.

Participating programs include: Nursing, Business Administration, Environmental Engineering, Bachelor's Degree in Basic Education with Emphasis in Humanities: Spanish and English Language, and a representative from the administrative area of the Academic Support Unit.

Miss Lina Tatiana Rojas Rodríguez, a student in the Nursing program and representative of the Atlantic region, received the crown of the 2017 Recycling Queen.

The purpose of the Recycling Queen pageant was to highlight the natural regions of our country, reflected in dresses made entirely from recyclable materials whose purpose is their reuse, said Environmental Engineer Kelly Yohana Ruiz Velásquez, leader of Environmental Management for the branch.

It is worth highlighting the leadership, enthusiasm, and empowerment of all those who participated in organizing the academic and environmental event, especially the first-semester nursing students, guided by Professor Nieves Ávila from the Health and Environment thematic unit. These students decorated and created a handcrafted display of figures representing the Barranquilla Carnival, such as marimondas and the caiman, using paper and cardboard. Kelly Yohana emphasized this point.

The Recycling Queen activity raised awareness among the 280 people attending the academic event about caring for the environment and using discarded materials to reuse them in crafts.

The Recycling Queen pageant was comprised of Magda Yamile Ruiz Velásquez, Deputy Director of the Special Administrative Unit for Risk and Disaster Management of the Cundinamarca Governorate, Julieta Casilimas, Representative of the Chamber of Commerce of the City of Girardot, Sub-Lieutenant González, Representative of the Environmental Police, and Fredy Valdés García, Administrative Director of the Girardot Branch.

The activity was supported by the sponsors Gaseosas de Girardot KOLA SOL, Agua Tropical, Molimotos, Fundación Social Amigos del Medio Ambiente FUNSOAMA, Policía Nacional de Colombia, Gobernación de Cundinamarca, and Dirección Administrativa de la Seccional.
