The University of Cundinamarca, through the Nursing program of the Girardot branch, had a prominent participation in the Forum National “The role of nursing in mental health care”, carried out in the Congress of the Republic on Monday, April 22, 2024.
Carlota Castro, Knowledge and Learning Manager for the Nursing program and president of the National Association of Nurses of Colombia, was present along with 15 ninth- and tenth-semester nursing students, representing the institution. In her presentation, she highlighted the importance of this discipline's role in mental health care.
During the event, the training processes in mental health in Nursing were reviewed at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as the scenarios in which this discipline strengthens and participates in mental health care, both in hospital settings and in the community, through primary care carried out in basic care teams.
Additionally, a proposal for postgraduate training and the strengthening of this area through advanced practice was presented, with the aim of strengthening training programs throughout the country.
The Forum included the participation of various organizations such as the Colombian Association of Faculties and Schools of Nursing, the University of Cartagena, different universities, the National Association of Nurses of Colombia and the Mental Health Commission, among other institutions from different regions of the country.
In her statements, Castro Quintana pointed out, “It is necessary for nurses to participate in interdisciplinary teams to improve and strengthen mental health care, since they are the ones who lead these processes in an integrated way.”.
Furthermore, he reiterated the importance of establishing a single statute for health workers, which guarantees the care of the caregiver, taking into account the occupational risks they face, including their mental health.
Finally, the knowledge manager emphasized the importance of continuing to strengthen mental health training, not only as a cross-cutting component in the curriculum, but also by creating specific spaces for training caregivers, with the aim of protecting the mental health of future nurses graduating from the University of Cundinamarca.
