The book by Rosa María Rodríguez Magda, a graduate and PhD in Philosophy, entitled “The Annoying Woman: Post-Gender Feminisms and Sexual Transidentity,” was presented to the university community of UCundinamarca on September 17th via Facebook Live. Rosa María addressed the topic of the new theoretical model of sexual transidentity, which is immersed in the paradigm of transmodernity. She explained how the paradigm of sexual difference has been replaced by the paradigm of diversity, which posits the idea of sex as transformation, as fluidity, from a transidentity perspective.
According to the author, the work reflects on how women have been a nuisance to traditional societies—in public life, in culture, and even within the family. This age-old misogyny has accompanied them, more subtly today due to their persistent efforts to demand their rights and make themselves visible.
The female subject has also become a nuisance to certain currents of feminism: it is declared outdated, Eurocentric, heteronormative, an archaic essentialist remnant of sexual diversity. Therefore, this work is a vindication of that troublesome woman; it analyzes the most current feminist currents and concepts such as identity, gender, the trans model, trans identity, and diversity. It is an essential text for understanding feminism today.
“In this transformation of models, the gender identity model vs the trans model of diversity, implies that the subject of feminism has been lost in the middle, because the female subject has become one more of the diversities and by becoming one more among the diversity what is lost from sight is all that oppression that we women suffer for having a certain sex.
However, alongside these advocacy policies, we find the recognition of diversity, which is important but does not solve the imbalances and injustices stemming from the structural inequality that women suffer in relation to men. Therefore, in feminism, women do not want to be recognized as women; that is not our issue. What we want is to shed the intergender identity that has been imposed upon us in order to liberate ourselves, to achieve equality and emancipation,” Rosa María emphasized during her Facebook Live broadcast.
According to the Spanish philosopher, “What’s important is the recognition of sexual diversity and that I not be marginalized if I am different in my gender choices, in my identification with femininity or masculinity, or with respect to my desires for either sex. The essential aspect of sexual diversity is that this diversity be recognized. However, what is important in the feminist movement is the emancipation and equality of women.”.
We're not talking about a problem of recognition, but about equality, justice, the manifestation of underlying power, and overcoming all those conditioning factors. Feminism is one thing, and reflection on gender, on what is normal, heteronormative, and what is dissent, is another. Within dissent and heteronormativity, there can certainly be feminists; feminism is an action that aims for global change, one that includes everyone.
