On June 8th, a planting of 300 Eugenia trees took place. The university community participated enthusiastically in this event, contributing to the beautification of the Soacha campus.
Under the leadership of Dr. Fabio Gil Sanabria, Administrative Director of the Soacha extension, and in conjunction with the Environmental Management System of the extension, the donation of plant material was arranged from the Agro-environmental Unit El Vergel in Facatativá, where Dr. Carlos Fernando Gómez delivered the Eugenias.
“Planting this species generates ecological benefits by protecting the soil and improving air quality, contributing to its structure and composition. Living fences are important habitats for preserving biodiversity, especially for species with a greater diversity of species, and they also provide protection in terms of composition, structure, and pruning management,” stated Karin Mesa Pérez, Environmental Professional, Soacha Extension.
Additionally, Eugenias help with connectivity in the landscape and become desirable systems in agricultural views to form an interconnection network between forests and tree uses, which facilitates the movement of organisms in certain territories.
“More plantings are coming in the second half of 2022, starting from the germination that is being done in the university garden with the support of administrative staff, teachers and students,” Mesa Pérez emphasized.
