Patient management in disaster situations

By Alejandro García Suárez – Communications Advisory Office

The University of Cundinamarca, Girardot campus, through its Nursing program, conducts various practical exercises to enhance its students' skills. On April 3, 2024, fifth- and tenth-semester Nursing students participated in a field trip as part of the Transmodern Digital Educational Model (MEDIT). The activity strengthened the students' competencies in managing trauma patients in emergency and disaster situations.

José Rubén Vargas Díaz, Knowledge and Learning Manager for the Nursing program in Girardot, emphasized that the field trip is framed within the core theory of nursing care for adults in surgical situations, emergencies, and workplace accidents. The purpose is to provide future healthcare professionals with the necessary tools to act effectively in critical scenarios that require timely and high-quality care.

The instructor explained that, “during the activity, the students participated in theoretical-practical workshops and simulations in natural environments. This gave them the opportunity to delve deeper into the conceptual aspects of nursing care for trauma patients, develop teamwork and effective communication skills, promote evidence-based decision-making, and acquire skills in rescue and life support.”.

Open fieldwork is based on the principles of MEDIT, promoting experiential learning, transdisciplinarity, the use of ICTs, and engagement with the context. In this way, students not only acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills, but also develop values such as empathy, solidarity, and a commitment to caring for human life in critical situations.

“This educational experience is fundamental to the comprehensive training of nursing students at the University of Cundinamarca, Girardot Campus, preparing them to face the challenges of healthcare in a world increasingly exposed to emergencies and disasters. The Nursing program is consolidating itself as an innovative pedagogical approach, committed to training highly qualified professionals prepared to meet the needs of society in the current context,” concluded the Knowledge and Learning Manager.
