Outstanding participation in Latin American Accounting event

By: Alejandro García Suárez – Advisory Office of Communications

The Faculty of Administrative, Economic, and Accounting Sciences, through its Public Accounting program at the Facatativá campus, had a remarkable performance at the IV Latin American Congress of Accounting Researchers (CLAICON 4.0). One of the most rewarding moments of the congress was the presentation by Karen Dayana Sanabria, a ninth-semester student, who presented her research entitled: “The Role of Accounting and Public Finance in the Formulation of Public Policies for the Integration of Venezuelan Migrants in Sabana de Occidente: Opportunities and Challenges for Sustainable Development.” Her work received praise from the Comptroller General of Colombia, Mauricio Villegas Gómez, who highlighted the quality and innovation of her approach.

The project aims to formulate public policies that benefit the migrant population, an area frequently neglected by the State. Karen emphasizes the need to integrate accounting and finance into the creation of strategies that ensure the inclusion of these migrants in the labor market and in society. “It is crucial that their contribution to the economy be recognized, not only as consumers, but also as job creators,” she stressed.

It is worth noting that the study focuses on the economic and social repercussions of the growing number of Venezuelan migrants in towns such as Facatativá, Madrid, Mosquera, Funza, Chía and Zipaquirá.

The Comptroller General of the Nation showed great interest in the study's innovative approach, suggesting collaboration with local municipalities to facilitate job opportunities for migrants. Karen explained that the project is being developed in four phases: literature review, document and data analysis, observations, and finally, the presentation of results.

For her part, María Yolanda Laverde Guzmán, Knowledge and Learning Manager, stated that the Comptroller General of the Nation emphasized the importance of effective collaboration with the mayors of the municipalities to review government plans related to migrants. “Our work has been to review the documentation and conduct interviews with the migrant population in the municipalities under investigation.”.

Laverde Guzmán emphasized that participation in CLAICON 4.0 reaffirms the commitment of the University of Cundinamarca to academic excellence and research in vital areas such as sustainability and digital transformation in accounting.

The congress also presented other relevant works, such as the debate by Irene González Espitia and Jorge Eliécer Rojas Gallo on “Changes and advances of emerging technologies and government accounting”, as well as the presentation by Ángela Duarte on non-financial sustainability reports.

The project presented by Karen not only aims to contribute to regional sustainable development, but also to reinterpret the role of accounting as a key tool in formulating inclusive public policies. “It is an opportunity to redefine accounting as a driver of policies that promote socioeconomic integration,” Sanabria concluded.

It should be noted that with the participation of members of the Technical Council of the General Accounting Office of the Nation and the Central Board of Accountants, the congress was consolidated as an invaluable platform for the exchange of knowledge and experiences, leaving a significant mark for the University of Cundinamarca in the Latin American academic field.

The university's representation was led by teacher Ángela Yolima Cita Velandia and the Knowledge and Learning Managers: Irene González Espitia, María Yolanda Laverde, Ángela Duarte and Nancy Huertas; and the students Karen Dayana Sanabria Castañeda, Diego Armando Pachón Cadena, Jorge Eliécer Rojas Gallo and Luz Adriana Herrera Mora.

This event was held from August 21 to 23, 2024 at the Externado University of Colombia, the Pontifical Javeriana University and La Salle, bringing together prominent experts and academics from across the region.
