The Nursing Program works with the community

Through the Nursing program of the Girardot branch, programs are being developed for the identification of risks and implementation of care pathways for the prevention of the consumption of psychoactive substances and violent behaviors within the families of young people and adolescents.

With an interdisciplinary team made up of students specializing in sexual health, we have been working with the educational institutions: rural school, Luis Antonio Duque and Atanasio Girardot school.

“The education sector, through Law 1620 of the coexistence manual, determined some needs to be addressed in this population, for this reason we prioritized three routes to implement,” said Carlota Castro, a teacher in the Nursing program and Coordinator of the Adolescent and Youth Friendly Unit.

These routes aim to reach approximately 860 students from these two educational institutions during this semester, providing support to reduce or eliminate inappropriate behaviors in order to prevent addictions and violence in their homes.

This work involves not only the UCundinamarca team, but also the school counselors, principals, academic and coexistence coordinators, student representatives and parents.

“Our initiative must be coordinated with the established care pathways outlined in the student handbooks of educational institutions and with healthcare services. It's a collaborative effort, where we also maintain contact with parents and teachers, understanding each case and whether or not it is affecting others,” Castro stated.

The idea, then, is for children to know what each care pathway offers, who they can count on, and how to access them, mitigating negative actions that ultimately affect their behavior and educational performance.

“For now, the routes have already been presented to the schools and approved by the school committees. This semester we will begin the process of informing the different members of the university community about their implementation,” Castro concluded.

It is worth noting that this work will also be coordinated with the health and education secretariats of the municipality and the department, along with the territorial committee.
