New biomechanics laboratory

With an investment of 400 million pesos, the new biomechanics, strength and electromyography laboratory was inaugurated at the Soacha Extension, through which the spectrum of research in areas of biomechanics, kinematics, kinetics and transfer of knowledge to practical support, as well as predict the mechanical aspects that prevent better performance of athletes and jobs, among others.

The laboratory is equipped with six optoelectronic cameras for passive marker capture and allows the integration of up to 16 cameras, 3D reconstruction, data analysis and development of mathematical protocols, calibration kit, high-performance triaxial force digital platform combined on a sensorized floor, minimal digital video cameras to analyze gait and movement in the frontal and sagittal plane simultaneously.

The wireless surface electromyography system is made up of probes with fully wireless electrodes, which are placed on the muscle non-invasively to detect the muscle activation signal during movement analysis, allowing the connection of up to 20 electrodes, battery life of more than six hours, with a wireless range of 20 meters in open space, memory capacity per probe of up to 1 hour and 40 minutes with 6 probes and more than 2 hours with more probes.

The analysis software allows the capture, processing and integration of all components of the movement system (optoelectronic cameras, force platforms, video cameras, electromyography system and plantar pressure measurement platform).

In the laboratory, it will be possible to perform strength tests, upper and lower body tests, muscle activations in a specific movement, gait analysis and movement in the frontal and sagittal planes simultaneously, posture analysis and intervention of muscle groups, diagnose muscle or nerve dysfunction, by using the graphic recording of the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles, among others.

“This academic acquisition contributes to the multidimensional field of learning, pIt allows the university to integrate with the region in measuring elite athletes and young talents, to predict their results and contribute to their training plans, in addition to contributing to research in ergonomics and performance in jobs in conjunction with the Industrial Engineering program, as well as integration with the Mayor's Office of Soacha to develop joint work with athletes and analysis of jobs,”, highlighted Luis Rafael Hutchison Salazar, coordinator of the Sports Science and Physical Education program.
