The visit of the students of the Environmental Engineering program of the Girardot branch to the strategic ecosystems of the Upper Magdalena region, including the El Yulo Wetland in the municipality of Ricaurte, had the purpose of building formative research and social projection processes for the strengthening of science, technology, research and innovation, for social, regional and productive development, linked to the need to contribute to the resolution of problems that affect the sustainability of ecosystems.
In the analysis, the students preliminarily recorded 26 species of diurnal butterflies, 29 species of birds, and in relation to the water quality, it was evident that it is moderately polluted.
Water resource monitoring was carried out through biomonitoring with macroinvertebrates, taking into account that the size of the animals ranges from 2 millimeters to 30 centimeters.
It is worth noting that the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, through the Environmental Engineering program, develops research projects for the conservation, recovery and protection of the El Yulo Wetland, whose natural reserve is characterized by having a tropical dry forest, in addition to being the only one in the Lower Basin of the Bogotá River, and with deterioration due to wastewater pollution.
The academic outing took place in June with the participation of teachers Héctor Fabio Cruz, Lyda Jeaneth Sanabria Velásquez, Sandra Bibiana Vargas and Jack Fran García Pérez, the students of the Environmental Engineering program, and the accompaniment of the CAR official, Ana Carolina López and Francy Monje from the Mayor's Office of Ricaurte.
