Molecular biology tools in pest management

The importance of molecular tools in the context of integrated pest management and biological control can be addressed from three perspectives, including: insect identification, population genetics, and reconstruction of food webs.

The applications of molecular biology tools in the contexts mentioned will be illustrated using case studies on pests of national agricultural interest, such as the outbreak mosquito Prodiplosis longifila (Diptera Cecidomyiidae) in solanaceous plants, aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and their generalist natural enemies (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae; Diptera: Syrphidae), as well as their specialist natural enemies (Hymenoptera: Braconidae).

It is worth noting that molecular tools such as DNA barcoding are strategies that complement classical taxonomy and allow for the strengthening of the identification of species of interest; they are also useful both for inferring population structuring processes and in the reconstruction of trophic networks, important aspects in biological control.

This videoconference is aimed at all those interested in molecular biology.
