Education as a tool for the development of the self, as embodied by MEDIT, allows students to explore their skills and talents and to carry out activities that help them to develop.
The University Welfare Office of the Girardot branch promotes activities for students to do in their free time, providing them with artistic expressions that will give them tools in their personal and professional lives.
“We apply MEDIT from the development of the self and also from translocality, we have held theater festivals, international, regional and intermunicipal meetings of musical bands, dance festivals, among other cultural encounters that encourage students to show their talent,” explained Lina María Celis Mejía, coordinator of University Welfare of Girardot.
The official also highlighted the importance of participating in these meetings where the competitive spirit emphasizes the values of young people and allows them to work on extracurricular activities that provide them with tools for life.
Likewise, these activities have allowed us to raise the profile of UCundinamarca, encourage students to engage with culture, and analyze other points of view according to the contexts in which they find themselves.
Greater sense of belonging
Lina, in her role as leader of the University Welfare process, affirms that these activities allow students to increase their sense of belonging to the Institution, to feel proud to belong to UCundinamarca and to represent it in different scenarios in the best way.
Through invitations to the different mayoral offices, UCundinamarca makes calls for the music band meetings, dance meetings and the international theater festival in which groups from Chile, Peru, Ecuador, among other invited countries participated.
“The Dance Encounter will take place on May 20th. We hope to broadcast this event live, which is promoted by the UCundinamarca Girardot branch and convened by the municipalities of Girardot, Tocaima, Ricaute, and Flandes,” Lina explained.
The reception of cultural activities has been positive; students say that during the pandemic, these activities allow them to interact with other people and develop their talents.
We can help here
At the beginning of the pandemic, the University Welfare coordination of the branch managed the donation of 60 food baskets that were distributed among the students most affected by the economic situation caused by the health emergency.
Likewise, some of the students who participate in cultural activities have benefited from tuition waivers for cultural activities, which motivates them to continue participating.
