Living classrooms to teach about caring for the environment

By: Víctor Eduardo Banoy – Professor of Environmental Engineering

Thanks to the Transmodern Digital Educational Model, which posits that the classroom is not the only source of knowledge, this Multidimensional Outdoor Learning Field was created where the student confronts reality in a common language with their knowledge manager, enriching their pedagogical process.

This process employs a formative dialogue in which everyone participates and learns, while simultaneously being creators, as part of a territory that sustains them and provides their economic livelihood. Furthermore, they are participants, driven by a shared need and interest that motivates them to work together in cooperation and solidarity, becoming doers, partners, owners, and contributors to the solution for building a sustainable life and well-being.

Taking into account the map of the El Vergel agro-environmental unit (see graphic scheme No. 2), potential intervention sites were selected, lots were identified, and plots were defined for the construction of vegetation cover, terraced walls, and multipurpose living fences. With the participation of Professor Daniel Armando Robledo Buitrago, a map of the El Vergel Agro-environmental Unit territory was created using drone flight. Areas of ecological recovery and connectivity were identified, with the following results: a total of 3362 m² of area available for intervention, with the development of environmental restoration protocols in two connectivity plots.
