Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education celebrates 40th anniversary

From May 22 to 26, the Faculty of Sports Sciences celebrates 40 years of existence of the Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, Recreation and Sports, a time in which it has proudly delivered 1,301 graduates to the country and currently, professionally trains 543 undergraduate students from different regions of the national territory.

This anniversary event includes academic activities, sports days, and a graduates' gathering with the special participation of Cecilia "Chechi" Baena, a Colombian skating legend, as the closing act on May 26 in the Emilio Sierra Baquero auditorium.

The opening featured 12 presentations by experts in the three disciplinary fields: Physical Activity, Recreation and Sport, on topics related to knowledge production in leisure and recreation, evolution of the Paralympic system, high performance, risk factors in sports training, impact of physical education classes, among others.

Emotional Opening

The opening of the celebration was marked by feelings of joy and nostalgia among the university's professors and administrators, who expressed the difficulties faced in the program's early days and its fruitful consolidation, evident today in its physical facilities, bibliographic resources, virtual classrooms, laboratories, audiovisual equipment, green spaces, sports fields, gymnasium, and physiology laboratory. They also highlighted the acquisition of the former CERCUN complex, which now serves as a learning campus for the institution and is envisioned as the center for sports studies and development at the University of Cundinamarca, and consequently, for the Faculty of Sports Sciences.

“For 40 years, the Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, Recreation, and Sports has contributed to the development of the country and to the visibility of the University of Cundinamarca, thanks to you, who have upheld the program with your disciplinary work in the areas of physical activity, recreation, and sports. This is an opportunity to congratulate those who are proud to belong to one of the flagship programs of our institution, and I invite the faculty, students, graduates, and all other members of the university community to continue enhancing the degree program today and always,” said Adriano Muñoz Barrera, Rector of the University.

For his part, the dean of the Faculty of Sports Sciences, Pedro Nel Quintero Turriago, highlighted that today the program presents a dynamic and academic evolution, with the sole purpose of training increasingly well-rounded and competent graduates who can transform and satisfy the needs of the different work environments where they find themselves.

Four decades later, I invite those present to remember and acknowledge that all this development has been possible thanks to the drive and dedication of many teachers, students, and administrators, led in its beginnings by that select group of professors who trained us, making possible the national recognition and standing of our Bachelor's degree program. Quintero Turriago emphasized.

Furthermore, within the framework of the celebration, the Faculty of Sports Sciences recognized the pioneering teachers of the program for their gratitude and valuable contribution as a founding professor of the program and their outstanding professional service to the University of Cundinamarca.
