Let's talk about sustainable agriculture

Agriculture faces constant challenges, and one of the most demanding is the efficient management of pests that affect essential crops, such as forage. In response to this need, AgroVisión was created, an innovative project developed at the El Tibar Agro-environmental Unit (Ubaté branch) with the goal of revolutionizing agricultural management through the use of advanced technology.

AgroVisión uses drones equipped with specialized software, designed with MathWorks 3.1, to identify and analyze pests affecting pasture crops. Through detailed images, the system detects and classifies the predominant pests, allowing for quick and accurate control decisions.

This solution not only guarantees greater efficiency in traditionally tedious processes but also optimizes the use of resources such as fertilizers and pesticides, contributing to more sustainable agriculture.

The origin of a necessary solution

The project arose from a challenge experienced at the El Tibar Agro-environmental Unit, where previously acquired software failed to meet user expectations. This motivated a group of students to develop a more functional tool adapted to local needs.

AgroVision was designed to benefit the users of the El Tibar Agro-environmental Unit, including students, Knowledge and Learning Managers, operators and administrative staff, who will be able to take advantage of this technology to improve crop management.

It is worth highlighting that AgroVisión stands out for integrating drones and image analysis into agriculture, an approach that allows for the early detection of pests, reduced pesticide use, lower operating costs, and optimized crop yields. These benefits not only improve agricultural productivity but also promote environmentally responsible practices, aligning with global sustainability goals.

The team behind the project

The development of AgroVisión is led by students from the Animal Science and Systems Engineering programs, with the active participation of students in their final semesters of Agronomic Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. Each student contributes expertise in precision technologies, programming, and environmental management, making the project an interdisciplinary effort.

It is important to note that AgroVisión is deeply aligned with the Transmodern Digital Educational Model (MEDIT), as it promotes the use of digital technologies to transform traditional processes such as agriculture. This approach integrates theory with practice, providing students with real-world experience applying cutting-edge technological tools.
