In order to raise awareness among the Udecina community about the importance of recycling and education about it, an invitation was extended for people to support a campaign aimed at collecting resources to support recyclers.
The Association of Recyclers of Sumapaz and Cundinamarca was present at the Third Green Challenge Meeting, formerly known as 'Reciclaton', organized by the University of Cundinamarca, and there a campaign was presented to support those who work daily in the selective collection of waste.
“The only support we have is from the community, and we're calling on them to support the recyclers. We started a campaign to support them called Plants for Life, and what we do is sell succulents and cacti that are delivered in a bag. The goal is to generate more income for the recyclers,” said Viviana Delgado Cubillos, spokesperson for the association.
While it is true that resources are needed to support workers in their duties, Viviana Delgado explained that the most important thing is for people to support the effort by properly separating waste and by purchasing plants through the association.
The union has been active since 2016 and has managed to train hundreds of people with selective collection routes, education processes, training in public entities and 'recycling marathon' programs with the CAR and educational institutions.
In this way, for example in the municipality of Silvania in Cundinamarca, there are environmental managers who carry out proper separation and collection of waste.
“In Silvania, we started in the town center, and today we have a 98% collection rate for the municipality as a whole. Every two weeks, we will collect the materials through the community board presidents,” said Viviana.
Currently, no state entity is supporting the Association of Recyclers of Sumapaz and Cundinamarca.
“Ideally, we would have the support of the relevant entities, but at this time we don't have any supporting us. The only thing we rely on is the law, but it's difficult because we follow a process where every 3 or 4 years, depending on the administration's term, the strategies change depending on the Mayor, and each one has new processes,” the spokesperson concluded.
