International Public Health Seminar in Girardot

Between May 18 and 19 in Girardot, the 2nd International Seminar on Public Health and the 4th Congress on Occupational Health took place, attended by approximately 250 people including university and academic community, nurses, IPS managers, health professionals and municipal and departmental authorities.

“This is an academic opportunity to build knowledge and research networks with the world, rethink problems, and seek strategies to address the challenges of the current health system and the determinants of health, such as climate change and environmental pollution, which affect health processes and populations in the country and Latin America,” said Ricardo Acosta Medina, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

“The city of Girardot is a global benchmark for public health issues, particularly diseases like dengue and Zika. This is an ideal space to share and learn about experiences related to public health situations affecting different communities. Therefore, it is important to reflect on all these issues and factors that affect public health, and what better host and partner than the University of Cundinamarca, through its Nursing program, for the region, the country, and the world,” stated Fredy Valdés García, Director of the Girardot branch.

It is worth noting that 15 presentations were given on topics related to the comprehensive management of health care and primary care, strategies for health promotion, prevention and education, social, health and environmental determinants, interculturality, displaced populations, post-conflict and new social conditions of the country, humanization of care and health, occupational health among other topics.

The seminar began with a presentation by Brazilian doctor Fátima Silva, who presented the paper “Management and Assistance in Health Institutions, experience project in the municipality of Victoria”.

Silva invited attendees to rethink a management and assistance model focused on social good, supported by the policies of states, departments, and municipalities, in order to optimize the health system.

For his part, Óscar Beltrán Salazar, a nurse, doctor, and professor at the Faculty of Nursing of the University of Antioquia, presented the paper “Care Model and Influence of Health Institutions on Humanized Care,” based on a study of impersonal or humanized care.

This type of care is based on the study of the Hourglass Model, which proposes the orientation of nurses in the practice of care and some elements of the institutional context.
It should be noted that the international seminar was chaired by the Director of Public Health of the Department of Cundinamarca, Mauricio Molina Achury, Director of the Girardot Branch, Fredy Valdés García, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Ricardo Acosta Medina, Secretary of Health of the municipality of Girardot, Manuel Díaz González, and other directors of the Girardot branch.
