Great recycling marathon 2021, Zipaquirá green and sustainable

This activity has been developed in recent years in the municipality in order to promote a culture of recycling, care for the environment and the preservation of ecosystems.

In this 2021-2 version, the Environmental Management System (EMS) of the UCundinamarca Zipaquirá extension worked in conjunction with the Secretariat of Rural Development and Environment, which leads this process with the objective of involving the university community and thus generating positive impacts among the community.

“The institution, in its commitment as a green university, with the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals and in its articulation with the Nature dimension of MEDIT, from the Environmental Management System, promotes good environmental practices in the Integrated Management of Waste. This is one of the greatest challenges worldwide, as well as in the institutional context; the change is in our hands here and now,” explained engineer Sandra León, Coordinator of the EMS.

The activity took place on December 1st and consisted of locating different strategic collection points throughout the municipality of Zipaquirá to facilitate community participation. These points included the El Prado neighborhood sports complex, the FEDEPAPA La Paz parking lot, and La Esperanza Park, with the presence of the Environmental Management System of the University of Cundinamarca at the latter location.

These locations included spaces for collecting various types of special waste, such as: computers and/or peripherals, used batteries, cell phone and computer batteries, expired human consumption medications, used cooking oil, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions, microwave ovens and air conditioners, lead-acid batteries from motor vehicles and motorcycles, used tires and containers and packaging of household insecticides. Recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard and plastic were also collected.

At the end of the collection day, the great participation and commitment of the Zipaquirá community was evident, demonstrating the correct separation of waste from their homes and promoting recycling within the municipality, of which the UCundinamarca university community is a transformative pillar.

“The UCundinamarca Zipaquirá Extension extends the invitation to participate in these recycling days to the entire territory, since each of us is the main actor in the care and preservation of the environment, and we have an untransferable responsibility to future generations,” said environmental engineer Andrea González, environmental professional at the Extension.
