Graduate creates app to protect social leaders

By: Juan Carlos Monzón - Communications Advisory Office

Its inventor is Yeferson Estiven Naranjo, from the Software Development Technology program at the Soacha campus, who did his internship at Guardian Software House. “I arrived at that company in my third semester, and as soon as I started, my boss ordered me to begin working on that application, which we call “Guardian Social Leaders,” since this is a critical problem in the country.”.

In Colombia, 258 victims have been murdered so far this year, according to the Institute for Development and Peace Studies (INDEPAZ), making the need for this system even more critical. “I spent a year and a half developing it, and it works like this: if the leader senses danger, they can activate the panic button, which connects them to the police. Also, through a satellite tracking system, for example, the Victim Protection Unit could see their location in real time and provide assistance. Similarly, they could file a complaint with the Prosecutor's Office from their cell phone without leaving home and risking their life,” he explains.

And he vehemently defends his creation. “The application is developed in the cloud and covers all Android updates. Furthermore, it has another advantage: if the community leader doesn't have the money to pay for a data plan, it can function perfectly well offline thanks to its VPN system.”.

All the tests have been completed and its performance has been optimal. "We conducted unit tests and it correctly captures all the information and is very intuitive to use, a fundamental aspect since, as you know, these leaders are often unfamiliar with technology.".

What comes next? “The company will now apply to Innpulsa and will seek help from SENA to promote it. They also plan to submit it to the National Protection Unit, which is the entity responsible for protecting this population.”.

Now, when asked what he plans to do with all the experience he gained at UCundinamarca, he answers without hesitation. “I see myself as a professional dedicated to cloud software development. I'm eager to acquire more and more knowledge!”
