Students, knowledge and learning managers, and the general public joined in a peaceful demonstration to express their discontent with the possible elimination of the pro-development stamp tax for the University of Cundinamarca, Girardot branch. This tax, created by Law 1230 of 2008 and adjusted in 2018 to increase its allocation from 0.5% to 1%, has been fundamental in strengthening academic processes and institutional growth.
Thanks to these resources, the University has been able to advance in accreditation processes, secure qualified registrations, improve its infrastructure, and expand training opportunities for the entire university community.
During the event, participants respectfully called on the municipal government to support the continuation of the stamp program, highlighting its direct impact on the social and educational development of the region. The demonstration opened a space for citizen dialogue that defended a key tool for student well-being and academic strengthening.
Maholy Sofía Rodríguez Corchuelo, a student leader in the Environmental Engineering program, stated that the demonstration aimed to highlight the students' discontent with the decision by the Municipal Administration and the City Council regarding the possible elimination of their program. “We are demonstrating and calling on all stakeholders to sit down and talk and work together. We are part of the institution, and our voices must be heard in decisions that affect us,” she added.
Direct and indirect benefits of the stamp
The Girardot community reiterated that the stamp is not just a tribute: it is an investment in the future of young people, in the quality of education and in the social transformation of the territory.
