Gender-based violence is a type of physical or psychological violence perpetrated against any person or group of people based on their sex, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity, which negatively impacts their social, physical, psychological, or economic well-being and identity. According to the United Nations, the term is used "to distinguish common violence from that which is directed at individuals or groups on the basis of their gender," constituting a violation of human rights; this approach is shared by Human Rights Watch in various studies conducted in recent years.
In a regrettable historical context, women have been victims of violence in society. Gender-based violence manifests itself in various ways, including acts that cause suffering or harm, threats, coercion, or other deprivations of liberty. These acts occur in all areas of social and political life, including the family, the state, education, the media, religions, the workplace, sexuality, social organizations, public spaces, culture, and so on.
The forum aims to raise awareness among the academic community, public officials, and the general public on issues of gender-based violence, with the following presentations:
• Femicide and access to justice
• Right to a life free from violence against women
• Fusagasugá: Without violence, without labels (LGBTI population)
• Gender violence in Fusagasugá
The event is organized by SENA in conjunction with the Secretariat of Family and Social Integration of Fusagasugá, the Secretariat of Women and Gender Equity of Cundinamarca, the Directorate of University Welfare of UCundinamarca and the Municipal Ombudsman of Fusagasugá, among other entities that champion the defense of human rights.
