Exchange of experiences and research at an academic meeting on sport

The Faculty of Sports Sciences held the II International Seminar on Updates in Physical Education, Recreation and Sport and the I Meeting of Research Seedbeds.

More than 470 people, including members of the academic and research community, coaches and physical trainers, graduates, teachers, and other sports professionals, participated in the II International Seminar on Updates in Physical Education, Recreation and Sport, and the I Meeting of Research Seedbeds, during the days of August 23 and 24 in the Emilio Sierra auditorium of the University of Cundinamarca – Fusagasugá Campus.

The academic event featured the participation of 14 internationally renowned experts, including PhDs and Master's degree holders from the University of the Andes (Venezuela), the Manuel Fajardo University of Physical Culture and Sports Sciences – UCCFD of Havana (Cuba), the University of Valle, and the University of Cundinamarca, among others.

Likewise, during this meeting, 16 outstanding research groups from the Faculty of Sports Sciences participated in the different activities that addressed outstanding topics related to physical activity.

“The seminar aimed to foster an academic encounter, a space for training, and an exchange of experiences and knowledge with expert professionals in the new trends and results of doctoral research in areas of sport, recreation, physical activity, sports physiology, sports medicine, training, among others,”, highlighted Pedro Nel Quintero Turriago, dean of the Faculty of Sports Sciences.

Alongside this event, the First Meeting of Research Seedbeds was held, whose purpose was the exchange of results on research carried out by students of the Faculty of Sports Sciences.

“This academic setting is beginning to become part of the field of disciplinary learning under the approach of fostering learning beyond the conventional classroom,”, Quintero Turriago added.

Dr. José Rafael Prado Pérez, from the University of the Andes (Venezuela), presented the paper “Experiences in Research, from Ethics, Complexity and Humanity, a Generating Path for the Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Society”.

“Research in the area of disability or special educational needs should be a space for deep reflection on realities or phenomena in order to create inclusive research spaces that promote acceptance of others, their recognition and respect for their differences, coexistence, love, peace, tolerance, and social justice. It is necessary to orient it towards a true creation of knowledge that allows us to provide answers to an increasingly complex world.”, Prado Pérez pointed out.

On behalf of the University of Cundinamarca, Oscar Niño Méndez, PhD from the University of Barcelona (Spain) in the Physiology program, presented the acute effects on blood pressure of a single anaerobic exercise at maximum intensity and an incremental one.

Niño Méndez's pilot study explained how the cardiovascular benefits of exercise can reduce risk factors by up to 40%, even in a single practice, with high blood pressure being one of the main risk factors worldwide.

For his part, speaker Harold Manzano, PhD in Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences from Texas A&M University (USA) and professor of the Recreation program at the University of Valle, spoke with the academic community about recreation in times of uncertainty.

“Through recreational activities, feelings are strengthened,” he urged, adding that “we should share space with strangers so that recreation becomes a bridge builder for encounters. Recreation is a laboratory, a place where we can experiment with possibilities of being together to generate creative acts.”, Manzano indicated.

Another relevant topic concerned hydration and physical exercise in physical education students at the University of Cundinamarca, which was led by Herney Romero Lozano, Master in Nutrition and Dietetics with emphasis on Nutrition and Physical Activity from the University of León (Spain), PhD in Sciences of Physical Activity and Sport University of the Andes (Venezuela).

The pilot study by Romero states that “The studied population does not exhibit proper hydration habits before, during, and after physical activity. Likewise, they do not relate the type of exercise, intensity, duration, and climatic conditions to the amount, frequency of consumption, and type of beverage.”.

Finally, the Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education presented a successful summary of the academic event and the achievements to date by the research group of UCundinamarca.

“This space showcases the University in the area of research and professional development in physical education and its various fields of knowledge. It facilitates research networks between expert PhDs and the educational community. Of particular note are the presentations and progress of the 16 outstanding research groups, the 14 expert national and international speakers, and the more than 470 attendees who exchanged experiences and academic knowledge related to sports.”, Quintero Turriago concluded.
