Environmental project in Silvania with student support

To this end, on April 23rd, with the assistance of tenth-semester students from the Environmental Engineering program, a workshop was held to identify critical aspects related to this issue. “For this purpose, the presidents of the community action boards from both the urban and rural areas were invited, along with representatives from the municipal administration, the Silvania public services company (Empusilvania), the Sumapaz and Cundinamarca Recyclers Association, and the Departmental Secretary of the Environment, all of whom made significant contributions,” commented Luis Miguel Castañeda, professor and co-leader of the process.

For Viviana Delgado, legal representative of the Sumapaz and Silvania Recyclers Association, who was present at the event, the gratitude towards UCundinamarca is immense. “The support they are giving us with the municipality is very important, as they are training us in solid waste separation processes and updating the Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan (PGIRS), for which the participation of the institution's students has been key.”.

Likewise, Paula Díaz, a professional with the public services company Empulsivalnia and a graduate of the University of Cundinamarca with a degree in environmental engineering, stated that “it was important to share with the students, analyzing and evaluating the state of the municipality in relation to solid waste management in order to update the plan. The important thing here is that we can address these shortcomings and identify the problems and circumstances that need improvement.”.

On the other hand, German Andrés Guevara, a contractor for the Secretariat of the Environment who also participated in the event, stated that “the meeting with the community and the people from the university served to socialize the different problems that the municipality has while at the same time discussing the different solutions, since the current PGIRS is from 2017 and needs to be updated to bring it in line with the reality that is lived.”.

In this way, the university reaffirms its Mission, which speaks of being a democratic, autonomous, educational, and transmodern social organization of knowledge for the benefit of a society that seeks to improve its living conditions.
