Nurse promotes reforestation in Girardot

By: Alejandro García Suárez – Advisory Office of Communications

Caring for life goes beyond human health. This is demonstrated by Maritza Arriero Sánchez, a graduate of the Nursing program at the Girardot branch (2005), who has transformed her passion for the environment into an initiative that today sows hope in the region.

This is "Leaves of the Tropical Dry Forest," a project that began in August 2019 in response to the environmental crisis caused by the fires in the Amazon and their impact on nearby ecosystems. This initiative stems from the conviction that protecting nature is also an essential way to protect our health.

Maritza explains that what began as a small-scale seed collection and self-directed learning project has now become a consolidated initiative focused on the conservation and reforestation of the Tropical Dry Forest, one of the country's most threatened ecosystems. Her purpose is clear: to recover biodiversity, restore water sources, and protect wildlife habitats.

The process involves collecting seeds from native trees, applying propagation techniques such as scarification, and monitoring the seedlings' growth until they are planted in degraded areas. This work, which combines technical knowledge and environmental commitment, has strengthened reforestation efforts in Girardot and surrounding municipalities.

From planting its first tree, a blue guayacán in 2019, to donating native species to nurseries and institutions, “Hojitas del Bosque Seco Tropical” has grown thanks to the coordinated work with organizations such as the University of Cundinamarca, educational institutions of the municipality, the National Police and the community in general.

More than just planting trees, this initiative sows awareness. It reflects how knowledge, dedication, and love for the environment can transform realities and contribute to building a more sustainable future.

In line with the Transmodern Digital Educational Model (MEDIT), these types of experiences demonstrate the development of individuals capable of integrating knowledge, acting responsibly toward their environment, and generating real transformations in their communities. Thus, the University of Cundinamarca continues to envision an education that transcends the classroom, promoting actions with human, environmental, and social significance.
