Diploma in musical creation and musical arrangements

Diploma in musical creation and musical arrangements

Noticia U Cundinamarca interviewed Mateo Sepúlveda, a professor in the music program who leads this continuing education initiative, about its scope.

UCundinamarca News: What does this diploma program consist of?

Mateo Sepúlveda. (MS). This diploma program focuses on exploring the music creation process for both experts and novices. Some people may have what we call a "good ear" for music, but they haven't formally studied it. These are people who play instruments like guitar or bass and would like to explore the process of creating music, how to improve their existing songs, and how to write them more effectively. That's the focus of this program. It's even beneficial for musicians who play an instrument but have never ventured into the creative world of songwriting.

UCundinamarca News: How is the diploma program structured?

(MS). The diploma program consists of six modules. The first module covers how to develop a musical idea, what lyrics to write, what instruments to include in the song, and how to write it in musical notation. It also covers melody and rhythm.

In the second part, we'll talk about harmony and more technical topics like chords, how they work, and the feeling they create at certain moments. This is more theoretical.

In the third lesson, we'll delve into a historical aspect. We'll explore musical traditions and genres according to each student's musical preferences. I'll provide significant support from this perspective. For example, if someone enjoys ballads, I'll discuss that, or if they like rock, I'll cover that too.

In the fourth module, we'll focus more on practical application. You'll be asked to share your musical idea. Then we'll begin exploring the instruments and how they work. It's important to note that it's not necessary to know every instrument, but after this initial review, each student will choose a group of instruments and say, "I want my piece to be accompanied by a violin, a flute, or a piano." From that point on, the composition process begins.

Module five is more about musical ensemble where the musical idea is already accompanied by the arrangements.

Finally, with module six, the student will receive personalized advice to improve the song they have worked on during the diploma course.

UCundinamarca News: What skills will the person have acquired upon completion of the diploma program?

(MS). You will be able to clearly understand the ideas and concepts of musical creation, melody, rhythm, and harmony, and to propose arrangements and orchestrations. You will also be able to differentiate between inspiration and a finished musical work, because sometimes people think that the former is enough, which is not true.

UCundinamarca News: What is the cost of the diploma program?

The cost is $910,000, it's a total of 120 hours, and we'll start next year. For more information, please contact Ana Betina Morgante at the following email address: [email protected]
