On Friday, April 30, the Sembrando Esperanza Cultural Learning Field event was held at the Ubaté branch, where one of the central themes was the creative capacity with low-cost technologies in our task of being more friendly to the planet.
Graduates, businesspeople from the region, students, parents, and from Mexico, as a special guest, Professor Carlos Pinedo, coordinator of the Bachelor's Degree in Agribusiness program at the University of Guadalajara, attended this meeting in support of the environment.
Dr. Miguel Alejandro Flechas Montaño, director of the Ubaté branch, explained that “the overall objective of this CAC Sembrando Esperanza event is to transform habits by promoting the use of creative and innovative alternatives for mitigating waste generated in our environment, through the development of low-cost, home-use technology prototypes that generate positive impacts on our environment.”.
During the event, workshops were held that encouraged participants to use creativity for the sustainable and low-cost use of technology. The ideas were presented in an easy-to-understand way so that all Facebook Live viewers could implement them. This section was led by Laura Camila Gómez, an Environmental Engineer; Cristian Cano, a Systems Engineer and professor at the Ubaté campus of UCundinamarca; and Camila Andrea Arévalo, an Engineer and Manager of the El Tibar Agro-environmental Unit.
Water filter workshop: Environmental engineer Laura Camila Gómez explained how to make a water purifying filter, using items such as a reusable 6-liter soda bottle, fine sand, activated carbon, and cotton, among others.
Solar Panel Charger: Systems Engineer Cristian Cano, a professor at the UCundinamarca Ubaté campus, conducted a workshop on building cell phone chargers using solar panels. The workshop utilized components such as a small solar panel, rechargeable AA batteries, a dual AA battery holder, a USB booster, a soldering iron, solder, a switch, and other items. These types of devices help utilize renewable energy and reduce electricity consumption in our homes.
Vermicomposting: Led by Engineer Camila Andrea Arévalo, Manager of the El Tibar Agro-environmental Unit, a vermiculture workshop was held using organic kitchen waste and a lidded bucket, among other materials. This type of activity helps reduce the amount of waste thrown away daily with the rest of the garbage and improves soil conditions in gardens and orchards, among other benefits of sustainable agriculture.
“Since 2020, we have been carrying out activities focused on providing tools that allow participants to know how to act consciously at all times and places, with respect for the environment, taking advantage of resources within the home and establishing an environmental culture within it,” said teacher Miguel Alejandro Flechas Montaño, director of the Ubaté branch.
The executive also explained that these types of meetings are important because they encourage environmental awareness by providing workshops and tools that strengthen environmental culture. He also thanked Sinova and Logística Digital, companies in the region, which provided the resources that allowed students to participate remotely in the workshops for this event.
