CoronArchivos, records environmental restoration

Thanks to the initiative developed by José Mancera, a professor at the National University, in partnership with German biologist Horst Salzwedel and Fredy Duque, a professor at the Environmental Engineering Program, Facatativá extension of the University of Cundinamarca, CoronArchivos was created. This web portal allows citizens to participate and contribute audiovisual material about the environmental restoration taking place without human intervention. Although still in its early stages, it is hoped that it will have a significant impact on environmental preservation in the not-too-distant future.

By completing the form found in “My Experience” on the platform www.coronarchivos.com Citizens can make their contribution and also consult and obtain audiovisual material from other citizens who have evidenced the environmental changes of various ecosystems during the isolation due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19).

“We invite students, teachers and the university community of the UCundinamarca institution in general, with a special emphasis on the provinces of the Cundinamarca department, which we know have had a considerable increase in the consumption of natural resources and generation of solid waste,” adds Professor Duque.

“This social experiment allows us to demonstrate the great resilience that ecosystems can have; it is not that the fauna is recovering spaces, it is that it has never left, it is our daily life and the daily rush that has not allowed us to perceive that environment,” declares Fredy Duque.

“I believe that a good environmental restoration process must begin by rethinking ourselves as a species that cannot abandon this great ecosystem called planet Earth; on the contrary, I propose that each member of the institution propose scenarios for sustainable development,” Duque adds.

It is worth noting that “the platform has been operational for a week now, and we expect to keep it running for a good while, not only during the pandemic but also in the post-pandemic era. Currently, the scientific focus is on health, the diagnosis of COVID-19, and flattening the curve of contagion; however, we see that there are other relevant aspects in the economic and environmental spheres that need to be studied,” says Professor José Mancera of the National University.
