Congress on quality and association in the dairy sector

Between October 23 and 24, the first Departmental Dairy Congress “Quality and Association in the dairy sector” is being held in Ubaté with the participation of the productive sector and academia.

Committed to the transmodern digital educational model – medit 'educating for life, democratic values, civility and freedom' and attending to the development of this project, the University of Cundinamarca has provided this space to learn and promote encounters that foster learning in dairy producers of the region and students.

Among the topics being discussed are: optimal grazing management, feeding and compositional quality in dairy production, transmissible reproductive diseases in dairy production, the importance of association in the agricultural sector, regulations on the labeling and marking of dairy products, analysis and reflections on the problems of the dairy sector in the country, as well as the socialization of the Ecofarm; a project of the Animal Science program of the Ubaté branch.

Dairy activity in the country

The dairy industry in Colombia has been very dynamic over the last 30 years. In the 1970s, it grew at an annual rate of 4.71%, followed by exceptional and sustained growth of 6.51% during the 1980s. In the 1990s, milk production grew at an annual rate of 3.81%, reaching approximately 5.877 billion liters of fluid milk in 2001. The national dairy sector is facing a precarious situation.

This is the result of a combination of adverse circumstances, structural weaknesses at various stages of the supply chain, a lack of political will—understood as the willingness of stakeholders to implement reforms and policies—and a disregard for a guiding national policy that reconciles private interests and prioritizes the well-being of the Colombian population and the competitiveness of the entire chain.
