Committed to the mental health of communities

By: Alejandro García Suárez – Advisory Office of Communications

With an investment of 1.1 billion pesos, the University of Cundinamarca will launch the first Mobile University Mental Health Unit in Colombia in the second half of 2025, a project led by the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Psychology program of the Facatativá extension.

The program coordinator, Rafael Cortés Lugo, explained that this initiative will provide psychological support to students and communities in the department, especially in rural areas or areas with difficult access to mental health services.

“This unit will offer outpatient psychological services, support the practical training of our students, and strengthen mental health in the region,” stated Cortés Lugo. The project is part of the Transmodern Digital Educational Model (MEDIT) and aligns with Cundinamarca's public health policies.

The Transmodern Psychological Clinic (Mobile Unit) will address issues such as anxiety, stress, substance abuse, violence, and other mental health disorders, which, according to the Ministry of Health, affect 17.4% of adults in the country. It will also help combat stigma and bring timely care to underserved areas.

In addition to community care, the unit will function as a clinical practice space for students, complying with current health and education regulations, and strengthening skills in Primary Care, Family and Community Health.

The University has already obtained the special registration for healthcare providers (REPS) from the Cundinamarca Health Secretariat and the registration of the practice site with the Ministry of Education. This unit will also generate new data for clinical psychology research, contributing to scientific knowledge and the social transformation of the department.
