Combining science and sport will lead to better health

On May 26, the seminar "Advances in Research in Sports Sciences" was held, with 600 attendees. "The objective was to create a space beyond the practical aspects of academic sports topics to discuss research, current events, and developments in Sports Sciences and Physical Education with professionals who graduated from the University of Cundinamarca and some external participants," stated Hugo Celemín, sports advisor at the University of Cundinamarca's Chía and Zipaquirá campuses.

This activity was developed within the framework of the digital project of the first academic period 2022 in which Jerson Camargo, a graduate in Physical Education with experience as a local and national sports coach and David Alfonso, a specialist in Sports Training from UDEC with experience in professional cycling, participated.

This was a space where knowledge, research and current events in the world of sports were shared with the educational community on topics directly related to the identification of sports talent, which for the first time in the country is being carried out with official questionnaires. The relevant topic of genetic studies that allow the detection of an athlete's potential to know, for example, if he is better than another, was also discussed.

“We have an academic program and a specialization focused on sports training that has allowed us to be seed producers of professionals, who in the future will intervene in this space, which translates into the contribution of UCundinamarca in professionals who nourish the world of sports based mainly on science and study,” Celemín explained.

The goal, then, will be to continue with these types of activities, which are expected to become more frequent. "The aim in the near future is to hold a sports knowledge fair where we can interact with all the university campuses, as well as invite other national and international institutions," added the sports advisor.

The seminar was organized by the Sports Science and Physical Education program and the University Welfare team, which issued a very clear message to the entire community: “We need more science and study in what we are doing on a daily basis, and in this way, we will be able to take better care of the health of our athletes and people in general,” Celemín pointed out.
