The University of Cundinamarca distinguished itself at Agroexpo 2025, Colombia's most important agricultural fair, by winning a prestigious award. One of its Blanco Orejinegro (BON) cattle, from the La Esperanza Agro-environmental Unit, was crowned first in its category as Reserve Adult Champion and Reserve Grand Champion at Agroexpo 2025.
Dr. John Alexander Moreno Sandoval, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, expressed the institution's pride in this achievement. "For us, it is of great importance to have been able to present our Blanco Orejinegro breed, which has been the subject of selection processes, genetic improvement, and cutting-edge technological applications to reach the level we have today," he stated.
The participation of the University of Cundinamarca in Agroexpo represents the convergence of various animal husbandry disciplines, with the aim of promoting and conserving a Colombian Creole breed with invaluable genetic potential. The Blanco Orejinegro, with 500 years of natural selection since the Conquest, possesses very important characteristics that must be preserved.
Moreno Sandoval described the day's events as "very positive" thanks to this victory. He highlighted the crucial support of the Colombian Association of Breeders of Colombian Creole Breeds and the increased visibility this award brings to the university and its impact. "It's an opportunity to stand out against other livestock operations with extensive experience and technological applications," he added.
The dean highlighted that this achievement is the result of teamwork that integrated the commitment of the students, the Knowledge Managers and the administrative staff, with special thanks to the La Esperanza Agro-environmental Unit and the Academic Support Unit.
In particular, he highlighted the commitment of the students from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and the Zootechnics program of UCundinamarca: Laura Páramo, Julián Rojas, Helen Arboleda and Óscar Villalobos, among other students who participated in the process, who responsibly and dedicatedly took on fundamental tasks such as preparing the animals, formulating individual rations and implementing health plans, in a process that began several months before the event.
For her part, Laura Daniela Páramo Pardo, a student in the Animal Science program, highlighted the importance of the recognition and stated that “This is not the first time the University has been awarded in this area.”, This reaffirms the institutional commitment to excellence in the agricultural sector.
Thanks to this coordinated effort, the University of Cundinamarca obtained excellent results and national recognition for its work in the conservation, genetic improvement, academic training and dissemination of the Colombian Creole breed Blanco Orejinegro.
Finally, Dean Moreno Sandoval emphasized that this participation demonstrates the potential of a 21st-century UCundinamarca, capable of bringing its technologies and learning to the reality of the countryside and to the solution of problems.
The Blanco Orejinegro breed is consolidating itself as an emblem of the university, demonstrating its ability to generate research initiatives, impact the territory and offer producers a breed with great genetic potential for diverse productive scenarios in the Colombian tropics.
