This is the UCundinamarca program “Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Aimed at the Elderly, Adults with Chronic Illness and Caregivers – CASSA UDEC”, which is part of the extension project of the Nursing Program of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Girardot branch, which has as one of its main axes physical, mental and social activity with the purpose of promoting lifestyle habits in older adults.
“We develop physical, sports and mental stimulation activities for our senior citizens that promote the maintenance and preservation of their physical and mental capacities, thus expanding their practice of healthy behaviors, self-care and prevention; achieving a significant decrease in the appearance of chronic non-communicable diseases,” explained María Victoria Rojas, Master in Nursing and Coordinator of the CASSA UDEC program.
Among the cases worth mentioning is the story of Mrs. Maria Elsy, a 75-year-old beneficiary, who, after suffering from COVID-19, says that thanks to this project she managed to save her life, as she herself says: “I am here because of you and the activities we do. The doctor told me that thanks to my physical condition I was saved, since I have acquired and practiced the routines and recommendations that they give me in the CASSA UDEC program,” the beneficiary said.
“These are the things that motivate us to continue our community work at the University of Cundinamarca. We are helping older adults adopt more self-care habits, since a sedentary lifestyle can accelerate joint, muscle, emotional, and cognitive problems,” Rojas concluded.
This 2022, CASSA UDEC will continue its work in person to continue encouraging these types of practices that bring health and life.
