Business Administration student starts business

Laura Sofia Albornoz is a Business Administration student at the Chía extension and the pandemic brought with it the strength to start a business, as she went from the stability of a job to the uncertainty due to Covid-19.

It was then, in the midst of lockdown, and just to kill time, that Laura Sofía took a TransMilenio bus and ended up at the Caracas and 53rd Street stop, buying a series of skull-shaped planters, typical of Mexican culture, to paint. “I did it to keep myself entertained. I got home and created some new designs and painted them. A few days later, some cousins visited me at my apartment and liked the planters. That's when they asked me to make some and sell them. Later, my sister, who works at the Leonardo Da Vinci School, brought some more, and they all sold.”.

Thus she created Skull Pot, an enterprise born from the skillful hands of this woman who, as a child, watched her father, a cabinetmaker, develop scale models of ships and, according to her, "that influenced me to develop crafts from an early age with great skill and now be able to make these planters.".

But to the above, we must add the training he has received at UCundinamarca, where entrepreneurship is integrated throughout his entire education. “Most of the courses I’ve taken cover this topic, and I’ve had excellent professors like Edison Padilla, who is very demanding and always reminded us that, to be an entrepreneur, you must have a good strategic plan that analyzes the competition, the product, the differentiator, and other key aspects.”.

All that academic background that nourished her intellectually also helped her to open a pet supply store called Pepitas Pet Shop, where she incorporated these beautiful handcrafted items. “I sell many products there, including collars I designed and planters, all with designs of dogs and cats, and business is going very well.”.

Now this flagship product, with its innovative designs, has already traveled abroad. "They've been taken to Italy and the United States, which is a source of pride.".

She has only words of gratitude for her university. "The institution has shaped me personally and professionally by broadening my perspectives on life in these areas, allowing me to succeed as I do now.".
