BON breed, protagonist at Agroexpo 2025

By: Alejandro García Suárez – Advisory Office of Communications

The University of Cundinamarca is preparing to participate in Agroexpo 2025, Colombia's most important agricultural fair, which will take place from July 9 to 20 at Corferias Bogotá. The Center for Agro-Environmental Studies (CEEA) will present 10 specimens of the Blanco Orejinegro (BON) cattle breed.

This initiative aims to preserve the Creole breed, promote research in genetic improvement, and strengthen the academic training of the Animal Science program. Guillermo Alfonso Caicedo Díaz, Knowledge and Learning Manager, explained that the project seeks to highlight the advantages of the BON breed and the advancements in animal health, nutrition, reproduction, and welfare.

The process of preparing the specimens is framed within the university's Transmodern Digital Educational Model (MEDIT), where the concept of a classroom extends to any space that allows for knowledge generation. Students work directly with knowledge managers in nutrition, reproduction, animal welfare, and preventative health.

“Students grasp theoretical concepts through hands-on learning and strengthen their motor, cognitive, communication, and teamwork skills,” Caicedo Díaz noted. This methodology allows future animal scientists to interact with professors, operators, and students from other semesters.

Anyeli González Sánchez, a sixth-semester student, highlighted that participating in the preparations for an international fair has been enriching. “We have implemented different practices such as preparing animals, balancing rations, and learning about animal welfare,” she explained.

For his part, Julián Romero, another participating student, expressed his pride in representing the institution: “I feel proud to be part of this team, representing our university at the national and international level.”.

It is worth noting that the university has several objectives with this project: to conserve important genetic material for the country, to conduct research in genetic improvement and reproduction, and to develop degree works and research related to livestock, pasture management and forage.

The students, along with knowledge managers and technicians, are responsible for designing diets, monitoring health, training, and morphologically evaluating the animals. This work is made possible thanks to the commitment of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and the entire academic team of the program.

Participation in Agroexpo represents an opportunity to showcase the scientific and academic advancements of CEEA, bringing applied knowledge from the public university to the agricultural sector. The institution reaffirms its commitment to education connected to the land and to sustainable rural development.
