App to assess functionality in older adults

By: Alejandro García Suárez – Advisory Office of Communications

The Sports Science program, in partnership with Systems Engineering at the University of Cundinamarca, has launched the study “Usability and Satisfaction of the Senes Mobile Application for Functional Assessment in Older Adults”. This digital tool allows us to measure the functional capacity of people between 60 and 90 years old who participate in the program. Physical Activity for Life.

Jhon Mauricio Medellín Cortés, the project leader, explained that Senes collects priority data such as age, weight, height, and the results of six physical tests focused on balance, strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. “We want to evaluate the functionality of our senior citizens and help them improve their quality of life,” he stated.

This project not only seeks to improve the experience of older adults, but also to strengthen interdisciplinary research at the university. “With Senes, we are combining technology and sports to positively impact the lives of our community,” Medellín Cortes concluded.

For his part, Luis Carlos Garzón Bedoya, Knowledge and Learning Manager for Systems Engineering, highlighted that the application has been developed since 2024 with the support of students in the program. “This application stores information, allows for tracking, offers recommendations, and tabulates results to evaluate each user's progress,” he noted.

For Martha Lucía Romero, a beneficiary of the project, Senes is a valuable tool: “It allows us to know our individual capabilities and in what aspects we can improve physically.”.

Fanny Stella Vargas, another participant, highlighted the importance of this initiative: “Despite our age, we can remain active and discover how far we can go with exercise.”.
