Regarding this, teacher Julieth Monroy González commented that it was an enriching experience for them because they learned to identify different breeds. They were also able to understand how an expert judges various species.
The group was divided into several teams to handle different areas. “They were rotated so that each one had different responsibilities. Some were at judging events, others had the opportunity to exhibit the animals and position them properly in the show ring, and others bathed, groomed, and prepared them properly so that they would look impeccable on the show ring,” he explains.
Students from the Ubaté branch also had the opportunity to experience livestock typical of the high and low tropics. “Since they live in a cold climate, not everyone has the chance to see these breeds, and there they were able to see them, which is important in the learning process because it broadens their perspective. It shouldn't all be based on books and videos,” he says.
For Cristian Forero, who lives in Cogua, the experience was enriching. “I found it very interesting to learn about all those breeds that I had only seen in photos, and I couldn't even tell several of them apart. I also had to prepare sheep and cattle for exhibitions. I also took the opportunity to make contacts for when I do my internships.”.
According to Cristina Reynoso, who lives in Ubaté, being at the country's main livestock show helped her learn about the handling and management of various breeds. “There they taught me how to give them multivitamins and how to feed them in general. I also bathed the sheep and was able to see them in the show ring afterward. That was very satisfying for me.”.
But his experience doesn't end there. “There was very good genetics in every animal I worked with. And one thing that surprised me was that I could see a horse selling for 500 million pesos and a heifer for 15 million.”.
Finally, she thanks the university for this opportunity. “I thank the professors who allowed us to be there. I think we did the institution proud, and that’s very important,” she concludes.
In this way, UCundinamarca contributes from know-how to the training of comprehensive professionals, which is what the labor market now demands.
